Work Begins on Serepok Dam
Mekong Media Roundup | Environment | VietnamDAK LAK, Vietnam - The first stage of dam construction for a 220-megawatt hydroelectric power plant on the Serepok river began at two communes in Central Highlands provinces of Dak Lak and Dak Nong on Feb. 7.
The power plant, the third project and the second largest one on the Serepok river, has a total investment of 4.855 trillion Vietnamese dong (303.5 million USD). Its construction began on December 2005. At present, dozens of kilometres of roads and thousands of square metres of workshops and camps have been built for workers, ensuring that construction of the dam is on schedule.
The third Serepok hydroelectric power plant is scheduled to have its first turbine put in operation in December. 2009, to be fully operational by March 2010. It is expected to provide 1 billion kWh every year to the national power grid. (Source: Vietnam News Agency, Feb. 8, 2007)
