First Generating Unit of Xiaowan Due in 2009
KUMMING - According to the Financial Committee of Yunnan People's Congress, the construction of the 4200-megawatt Xiaowan hydropower station has been progressing smoothly. The first generating unit is expected to operate in 2009.
The Xiaowan hydropower station is being built by Yunnan Huaneng Lancang Hydropower C. It is located in the middle reaches of Lancang River, on the junction of Nanjian county of the Dali Bai Ethnicity Autonomous Prefecture and Fengqing county of Lincang Prefecture. It is the second dam of the eight-dam cascade on the middle and lower reaches of Lancang river. It will cost over 30 billion yuan after adjustment.
By the end of April 2005, 7.085 billion yuan has been invested in the Xiaowan dam. After its completion, the total installed capacity of the other three dams, Manwan, Dachaoshan and Jinghong, will be increased by 1,100 megawatts and the total output will be added by 2.7 billion kilowatt-hours. -(Xinhuanet Yunnan Channel.)
