SYDNEY, Oct 3 (IPS Asia-Pacific) – Over the last decade or so, China’s deft use of soft power has seen South-east Asian neighbours’ view of it change from a looming threat to a largely friendly, if still imposing, giant to the north.
Laos-Vietnam Trade Has Much Room to Grow
Bilateral trade between Laos and Vietnam can be quadrupled to reach one billion U.S. dollars by 2010, A Lao official said in February.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Siaosavath Savengsuksa encouraged the two nations to take stronger measures to boost trade besides investment in rubber and coffee and hydropower projects.
Trade between the two neighbouring countries reached 240 million dollars in 2006, a year-on-year increase of 30 percent.
Savengsuksa said a supplementary agreement had been signed on import-export tariffs with a view to finally eliminate them. The agreement sought to promote trade in certain goods on the border, speed up administrative procedures at border checkpoints, and finance construction projects.
Bilateral cooperation for projects like rubber and coffee growing and building hydroelectricity plants was on the right track, he said. Thus, he added, the one billion dollar figure is quite feasible. (Source: VNA, Feb 11, 2007)
