These were some of the terms participants at a talk-show format discussion at the Mekong Media Forum used when asked to share the images of China they get from the media.

BANGKOK -- Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. What images might these words conjure up in the minds of international consumers of news? Perhaps war, maybe the Khmer Rouge. Or they might say, ‘Oh, it’s that those countries that had that war some time ago. . . they’re near one another, and they’re all the same’.

SYDNEY, Oct 3 (IPS Asia-Pacific) – Over the last decade or so, China’s deft use of soft power has seen South-east Asian neighbours’ view of it change from a looming threat to a largely friendly, if still imposing, giant to the north.
Yang Kun: A Life Well Lived
His dreams for filmmakers in the Mekong region. His role in opening the eyes of communities in his native Yunnan to the power of video. His generous insights as a mentor. His crinkly, smiling eyes and his sense of fun.
These and more are what we remember about Yang Kun, who passed away on Mar. 3, 2010 from leukaemia. He was 43.
A cultural and visual anthropologist-scholar, Yang Kun had become a familiar face in Mekong media and arts circles in recent years. He started his career as a documentary filmmaker and had been the lead organiser of YunFest (Yunnan Fest), a major independent documentary film festival in China for the past seven years.
Yang Kun was actively involved in the cultivation of film culture and film screenings in Yunnan and in China. The past 10 years saw him initiating and taking part in film screenings in colleges, in museums, in arts spaces and in bars in the cities and villages of Yunnan. He joined the Participatory Visual Education projects in rural Yunnan and witnessed the introduction and growth of video making in rural communities in the province.
A staunch believer in the importance of getting media to capture and convey different perspectives, Yang Kun worked with various initiatives in the Mekong region around media and the arts, including the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA) Mekong Project, the Imaging Our Mekong fellowship programme of IPS Asia-Pacific and Probe Media Foundation and Save the Children UK. (Yang Kun was a reactor at the 2005 peer review workshop of the Imaging Our Mekong programme that was held in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR.)
Yang Kun had dreamed of setting up a network of independent filmmakers in Asian countries, most especially in the Mekong region, in keeping with his slow, sure way of making a difference.
A kind and gentle person with passion for life, Yang Kun will be remembered for his infectious love for life and adventure, his energy, enthusiasm and generosity.

The Mekong ICT Camp (http://mekongict.org), a biannual training workshop on information, communication, and technologies for citizen media, community health, and civil society practitioners in Mekong subregion, is accepting applications until Mar. 31, 2010. Participants are welcome from the Mekong countries, including Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
