SYDNEY, Oct 3 (IPS Asia-Pacific) – Over the last decade or so, China’s deft use of soft power has seen South-east Asian neighbours’ view of it change from a looming threat to a largely friendly, if still imposing, giant to the north.
The Akha Identity across Borders
About 2.5 million of the Akha ethnic group live in a 3,000-square-kilometre-wide area in the Mekong region -- in Yunnan province of south-west China, northern Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Historically, they migrated from Yunnan about 500 years ago.
The Akha, a Tibeto-Burman group, also live in the Golden Triangle area, including in Kengtung and Tachilek in eastern Shan state, Myanmar. There, most Akha reside in Lwe Mawy Village, where there are some 200,000 people.
Though the Akha live in different nation-states, those from Burma and from China’s Yunnan province, Laos, Thailand Vietnam are the essentially the same. Their traditional wear, however, is a bit different depending on location and weather. Their languages are also a bit different.
But across political boundaries, the Akha communities have maintained their cultural practices. The Akha women’s hats, among others, reflect the ethnic group’s creativity. Their tops, skirts and stockings are made by hand. Akha babies need to wear stocking caps as soon as they are born. At nine or 10 years old, they learn how to cut wood and fetch water. Young Akha women begin to wear a bodice, crafted with silver, when they are 16. At 17, they wear skirts with a flap in front. In Kengtung, Akha women take great pride in their traditional dress and used to give these to their children.
Agricultural cultivation is the main livelihood of the Akha people. They mainly grow rice and other crops like corn, tobacco, cotton, vegetables, and raise buffalos, cows, pigs, chickens and ducks. There is a saying that Akha people only need to buy a hoe and salt – because they can produce food from what they grow and make themselves. But a lot of them, both in Thailand and Myanmar, do leave their communities in search of work elsewhere. In Kengtung, I chanced upon an elderly man in his house, which was virtually bereft of furniture, including chairs, and only had a bed. He has nephews, he said, but they are all working elsewhere, and he tries to earn what he can by making baskets.
In the Golden Triangle area in Thailand, all the children answered my questions about education in the same way: “All the teachers could not stay here for a long time”, although most of these teachers agree that “something should be done” for these communities.
Like other ethnic groups in the region too, the Akhas are finding that their culture are seen as a tourist attraction by others. Some groups can be found in tourist spots in the Mekong region, including resorts and hotels.
Still, I wish that the rich Akha culture lives on, that the beautiful rhythms of their dances continue, and that the Akha smile stays.
